The highest-grossing Thai film of 2003, pint-sized romance My Girl (a.k.a Fan Chan) takes a nostalgic feel-good journey back to 1980s Thailand. Backdropped by the sound of 80s Thai pop, My Girl is a joint effort by six up-and-coming filmmakers - Vitcha Gojiew, Nithiwat Tharathorn, Witthaya Thongyooyong, Adisorn Trisirikasem, Komgrit Triwimol, and Songyos Sugmakanan, who would go on to direct Dorm. The film's lead Charlie Trairat, who also later starred in Sugmakanan's Dorm and Hormones, is now one of Thailand's most popular young actors.
Jeab (Charwin Jitsomboon) heads from his hometown from Bangkok to attend the wedding of his childhood friend Noi-Naa (Focus Jirakul). On the road back, he flashes back to memories of his small-town childhood, his close friendship with Noi-Naa, and their fallout. Young Jeab (Charlie Trairat) never got a chance to say sorry or goodbye to Noi-Naa before she moved away. Her wedding will be the first time they see each other in many years. This edition comes with commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage and photo gallery. Special features: - Director's Commentary - Producer's commentary - Behind the scene (Never seen before) - Fan Chan go inter - Photo Gallery Jeab was an effeminate child who always played with Noi-Na when they were small because their houses were close together and there weren’t many other kids around.
Adolescence changed Jeab’s immediate social group and he started hanging around with other boys, and even agreed to torment the other girls - including Noi-Na - at his friends’ behest. Noi-Na was understandably upset and angry and her family moved to another province a week later. Jeab didn’t see her after that, but then one day he received an invitation to Noi-Na’s wedding. He wants to attend her special day, of course, but how can he live down the shame of his earlier, irresponsible actions? 1 people found this review helpful Great Movie, Lackluster DVD Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10 'Fan Chan/My Girl' is one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. It hits a lot of the right notes in makings its audience think back to their childhood. Some might say the movie is a little too specific to Thai children of the 1980's.
But after watching this (as a Chinese American of the 1990's), I have to respectfully disagree. The basic elements are there: the play acting, the boys vs. The girls, the fickle mood swings, the joy of simply learning to ride your bicycle with no hands. While some things like the 80's Thai pop are a little less easy to relate to, it doesn't matter so long as the movie ties all the elements into an interesting story. And because the characters are interesting, the story is interesting.
This movie, along with 'Hormones' and 'Dorm' have solidified Songyos Sugmakanan as one film director whose movies I'm going to follow as best as a non-Thai can. My comment isn't all praise though. The movie is presented in widescreen format, but it is not anamorphic.
That means the image is wide and you're not losing out, you know, black bars on top and bottom. But it's really designed for a full screen TV, something that is kind of dying out these days. And the image is a bit fuzzy at times.
Finally, the supplemental materials are pretty much nonexistent. You basically just have the movie, the subtitles, and the chapter select.
Still, the subtitles are (for the most part) well done so it's easy to follow the movie. For non-Thai speakers like myself who would just be happy to see the movie, I wholeheartedly recommend this Taiwan Version.
2 people found this review helpful Cute movie!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10 I watched 'My Girl' during the last night of the 2005 San Diego Asian Film Festival and was truly happy with my choice. Eventhough this movie is set in Thailand, it still offered the common innocence that binds all of our childhood. The main characters of this movie are young children but you could never tell by their acting.
The casting was great as all the children portrayed and adapted to their roles perfectly. In addition, this movie also provided laughs that were just so adorable and heartwarming. This is a feel-good movie that will bring joy to familes or any person of any age. The kids were just so cute. This movie has my highest recommendations!!!!!
