The starter edition was announced last week by microsoft for release in five more emerging markets (see our ). The cut-down software limits the users in a number of ways including number of applications running at once, printing and network abilities. Gartner's research has pointed out that the lack of features and limitations with applications will be very frustrating for users who may have had access to computers before at school or in cyber-cafes.
Upgrade issues are also a concern with no path given to a user who buys the starter edition but wants more. The only course of action for that user currently is to go out and buy a full-price copy of either xp home or xp professional. This is seen as a major oversight and could in fact drive more people to search out bootleg copies. Gartner's recommendations are for the enterprise sector to not use the starter edition and for the general consumer sector to not consider the xp starter edition until microsoft have rethought the package and offered an upgrade path.
I can't believe that a single person at microsoft would believe that releasing a version of windows xp with such drastic restrictions would make users dump their full, pirated copy of the operating system and revert to a limited functionality copy because they can afford it. On the other hand, it also isn't going to stop someone who can get a pirated copy from using it because it is obviously better than this cheap, light edition. Linux also comes into this debate because yet again it wins out due to being totally free. Microsoft obviously wont give away their software but unlike developed countries, they do not have an established foothold in emerging markets and unless they do something drastic, they wont get one either. If microsoft really wants to get things more legitimate in these regions and compete with linux, they need to drastically lower the price of the xp home edition.
It won't hurt them to do this in those regions as currently no one is buying it anyway due to the cost. If they couple price reductions with offers for students, schools and universities, then maybe they will see some success. Microsoft are releasing the starter edition in these new countries due to the success it has seen in thailand, however, the thailand release was pre-installed on pcs, i believe, so i think it is a bit of a falsehood to call it a success as people were buying the pc first and foremost. Who knows what os they are now using.

Wren national security (6:58am est mon aug 16 2004) i don't think ms is doing this as a cheaper way of doing an os. But in fact they want a market to sell their os and know that if they start out cheap to begin with then they can get some people hooked to go out and spend again on the more expensive version. Kinda like a shareware version that cost to use it. Also i think since 9/11 the dhs is probable thinking that we don't need to be selling top of the line software to countries that have no use for a full blown version of an os unless the us can control certain aspects of what they intend to use the software for. On top of it all do you want to learn a complicated os when you first start off.
Most of us have been using computers for a number of years now and we have learned how things work and what to expect. Do you remember dos, or the first version of windows. They didn't do much either comparied to xp today but we learned how to interact with it and then figured out what else we wanted it to do in hopes that the next version would incorporate some of that. As we can see we have an os (xp) that would have totally confused us 10 years ago. – by bait n hook ms marketing blows it (7:00am est mon aug 16 2004) why would people who already own the hardware buy this self limiting garbage if fully operational xp pro is available for less? Ms needs to try again. – by os/x stud cut down xp (7:01am est mon aug 16 2004) as this cut down version is going to asia etc, should we even be discussing this problem which appears to be a pure internal microsoft problem.
They are a big company with marketing experts. As with all micosoft products if its too expensive we don't have to buy it. You would not buy a mercedes car if you could not afford it so why gripe about ms. Basically you pay your money and make your choice. – by paul opinion of opinion of “matthew's opinion” (7:02am est mon aug 16 2004) that would be “it's hard to lend his opinions any credibility when it seems that he fails to grasp the correct usage of the english language in his writing”? No matter, i do not think your, matthew's (or my) use of the english language has any bearing on this argument.
Windows xp starter edition is sold in non english speaking regions. Bait n hook (7:03am est mon aug 16 2004) are you saying that dos is easier to learn than xp? That doesn't sound like a well thought out argument. – by os/x stud free xp pro for students (7:48am est mon aug 16 2004) “if they couple price reductions with offers for students, schools and universities, then maybe they will see some success.” i got xp pro for free as part of the msdn academic alliance when i started university. Allows you to download other software for free (apart from ms office) like visio, visual studio.net etc so at least ms is making headway in that area.

Im an asian person myself and i know that ms is about head to head with linux in those countries. I also know that most asian people wont buy a product when a free one is avalible (i dont think anyone would actually). But since ms has the public buying commputers with their software on it in the us it will be pretty hard for most users here to ever go to linux – by den85nis why not near free (9:18am est mon aug 16 2004) why not just sell xp home for like 29.99 and include just a cd and a getting started manual.
And professional as free upgrade from nt and 2000 pro it's not like they really need the money from it. They can recover their losses in the fact that people will buy the rest of their software – by notam$fan cluetrain finally arriving (9:28am est mon aug 16 2004) looks like the diehard microsoft nuts are finally waking up to how serious the linux threat is. The money ms makes off of the os and office software is going to keep going down, down, down as they desperately try to stem the flood of people/businesses/countries migrating to linux. With 11 billion shares outstanding and no significant revenue growth on the horizon and the mainline revenue streams under direct assault, it's clear why ms insiders have been dumping their shares as fast as they can over the past few years. – by xploitman n virusboy bah (10:08am est mon aug 16 2004) i'd take a limited version of xp over any flavour of linux anyday. The starter strategy is brilliant as most other ms offers: who needs a solid os?
Just add more fluff (read another half baked os), not a modular system customer's can actually use! Tells you what matters and all m$ customers are footing the bill.
Tarantino pointed assumptions (10:55am est mon aug 16 2004) i know these are assumptions, but – anyone who would even remotely consider buying xp starter or a pc with xp starter pre-loaded is immediately classified for most geeks as entirely unfamiliar with the computer world. A non-geek, as it were.
– a non-geek would most-likely want to do some generally simple things like watching dvd's and burning cd's, which can be quite trying in linux. Heck it can be trying for non-geeks even on windows with a ful gui app, so imagine on linux. – most inexperienced non-geek users looking for an easy os will or at least should be looking into buying a mac, but those are expensive in comparison and may not suit the person's needs, such as the games mentioned above. – despite it's many flaws, windows remains a leader in the os wars becuase it is a jack-of-all-trades operating system. It may not be the best os for every job, but it can be made to do that job through the gazillions of available applications.
Any restriction imposed by the os in this area restricts the value of the os. – by faces linux (11:36am est mon aug 16 2004) long live linux – by linux windows xp starter edition is crap!!! (11:47am est mon aug 16 2004) cut to this week's windows xp starter edition announcement and read “users can have up to three programs and three windows per program running concurrently. Further simplification of the operating system includes the display resolution set to 800×600 maximum and no support for pc-to-pc home networking, sharing printers across a network or more advanced features such as the ability to establish multiple user accounts on a single pc.”.
It's cheap, it's crippled, and if it's a bid to convert asian pc users from pirate copies of windows, it's surely futile. – by windows xp lite crap sorry (11:58am est mon aug 16 2004) but the ui for a consumer flavor of linux would never fly in the us on a broad scale, let alone in asia. Will this scaled down offering curb piracy? It is an idiotic move to think that, but at the end of the day, this will allow for an exposure to those whom are less fortunate. (11:59am est mon aug 16 2004).microsoft does have a sense of humor after all.
Xp starter edition, crippled and all. What will they think of next? I say no to windows any edition. – by cousin lenny wd (12:03pm est mon aug 16 2004) those who are less fortunate will just pirate xp full. I think this will die silently.
– by cousin lenny wd (12:05pm est mon aug 16 2004) “but the ui for a consumer flavor of linux would never fly in the us on a broad scale, let alone in asia.” yeah rightwd. The usual idiotic statement we alway expect form wd. Here are more facts since only you have worthless opinions. Microsoft readies xp-lite to keep linux out of asia market forcing software giants hand. The fact that microsoft is going to the trouble of producing a cut-down os is extremely significant. It demonstrates, more than ever before, how linux and the rise of open-source software has caused the market to drive microsoft, rather than the other way around. The software giant has been caught in a bind where it refuses to step back from its policy of one worldwide price for its products, but remains hopelessly expensive in important emerging markets.
When, last year, ibm started selling cheap linux notebooks to thailand, and then in september, the japanese, chinese and south korean governments announced a joint open-source project, the writing was on the wall. – by windows xp lite crap gutting the core (12:55pm est mon aug 16 2004) ms has spent the last decade using its sleazy contract relations with oems and file format lock in to make it an unquestioned assumption that every x86 computer in the world must have and pay for a copy of ms windows and office. Ms internally calls it their tax on computers. Without that universal tax, ms is nothing but a large company with a bunch of mostly marketplace loser products, like xbox.
This is no cute marketing trial or negotiating tactic. This is a desperation move to try to justify the high price of windows.
The universal derision of the product indicates that the computing world isn't fooled one bit. – by xploitman n virusboy samueul, you are retard. The truth hurting you so much that sink so low as to impersonate the lets see on windows xp lite to prevent the problem above, you can run an antivirus program and a third party software firewall and run system monitoring program and you can't run anything else.
No wonder garnder group is say no to windows xp starter edition – by windows xp lite crap re – windows xp lite crap (2:22pm est mon aug 16 2004) sigh. Yeah, i'm tron and the geek admin. Now put your pen and paper down, cross your arms on your desk, and put your head down. It's time for your nap.
Back to the topic. Xp lite truly seems like an appeasement in my eyes. What better way to sidetrack all the govs than to throw out a “stripped down” version of their os, just to say “look, we can play nice in other markets, we are not the monopoly you think we are, please don't fine us anymore” then go after those markets with extreme prejudice on the sly. Just my opinion as i can't for one second believe that ms was even half serious about windows xp lite.
– by samueul bill needs more money (4:34pm est mon aug 16 2004) microsoft makes all of their profit on the windows and office franchise. Nothing else they “make” earns real revenue. To allow these 3rd world markets to make a choice to use linux will limit m$ to the us an europe markets alone. The fact is, why should a 3rd world contry purchase a us product that does not feed their own economy. Why not support an free open source alternative to a us monopoly. Linux makes sence in the emerging markets and that is just something m$ is having a hard time swallowing.
On another note, there are great linux alternatives that will work in the us market. Suse, linspire, gentoo and even solaris will take care of just about any server to desktop need for cheap to free cost. You will see companies switch to linux because it just makes good business sense to cut cost without cutting features.
This can be done with any flavor of linux in place of windows. Microsoft knows this, they just don't want you to.

It's been over three years since it was clear what linux would do to the price of ms's os and office software. – by xploitman n virusboy ugh (6:27pm est mon aug 16 2004) i use windows, but it seems to me that all of the win. The mere comment 'aimed at the poor and minorities' is plain racist because clearly it is a mechanism to manipulate and steal from people. Cripple them as much as possible.
Go ahead and target latinos with this piece of crap. Bill gates does not need more money, he doesn't need to steal from people, cripple his employees, and so on and so forth. Aol does not need $23.95 a month to provide their 'faster than ever' always offline service along with all their 'free' trinkets that go along with their service that they provide with that stupid pc offer with the starter edition mentioned earlier. These companies go out of their way to suck as much money as they can out of people with the rhetorical game of “'gee' who are you to define what is ethical or not.” – by peter. Window xp crippled (8:46pm est mon aug 16 2004) i am surprised that no one has made the comment that xp is already crippled, why make an even more crippled version?
– by x dpd lol (10:38pm est mon aug 16 2004) i hope all you ms admin had your auto-update set on in xp. – by lol god made us to os a lot (12:59am est tue aug 17 2004) ok, can anyone say one thing about microsoft that sucks in every os they made? Lol all os's stink, and there will never be the 'best' os until at least some of us geeks go to heaven to live with god and jesus hmmm anyway, ms just downgrades more and more service packs are to come to slow down the computers once more. Bright side: computers have doubled speed and capacity anyway (i'm not complaining – as a christian shouldn't) one last thing: i'm not downing anybody here, however, god can make big gates get his act up for a better os if we all pray about it or email microsoft a million times, maybe that would get a news headline or something anyway, my opinion stinks just like old gates, so without further interruption, god bless you all, and may jesus christ be with you all. I love to see another os down the drain lol. – by lol use your imagination (1:12am est tue aug 17 2004) ok wait a minute i read in a pc magazine issue that microsoft was making a winxp os but this was supposed to happen before the big 64 bit program is this what u guys are talking about?? If so, what will the 64-bit os be like?
Also, this winxp thingy is supposed to be a small thing anyway, since ms is working on the 64 bit os i think they rushed the new winxp os as a diversion? I think it is a coincidential rumor and probably a distraction so linux can't get their fat hands to make a better program (instead, programmers will be thinking— what on earth happened here?). Then surprise in a year or so 64 bit os by microsoft how corrupt it will be we'll never know.oooh, the bandwidth it'l take also good so they can get a few patches for security etc.
Before the hackers do. – by 64 corrupt 2morrow wa, wa, waaa (7:46pm est wed aug 18 2004) pros point to flaws in windows security update – by lol dire (9:35am est wed sep 29 2004) this is an affront to the intelligence and non-techinal nature of users. This is a manipulation yet further of the markets and is infuriating.
They ms are a corporation devoid of morality and scruples. More importantly, quality is a very very minor interest with profit the obvious priority. The consumer loses.
– by gerry xp starter edition is aimed at not just minorities in the u.s. (3:33pm est thu feb 24 2005) according to microsoft aimed this os to third world countries where computers are too expensive for the average family.
